Matthew Broderick Car Crash Family Reach Out
The family left devastated when MATTHEW BRODERICK killed a mother and daughter in a car crash want to forgive the movie star.
ANNA GALLAGHER, 30, and her mother MARGARET DOHERTY, 63, were killed in August 1987 when a car Broderick was driving alongside his then-girlfriend JENNIFER GREY, ploughed into their vehicle.
Broderick spent weeks in hospital with injuries, and later admitted he had been driving on the wrong side of the road in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland. He pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving and was fined just $150 (GBP100).
Despite going through years of trauma over the accident, Margaret's son MARTIN now says he wants to meet the ELECTION star, so they can face their tragic demons together.
He says, "For many years after the accident, I was bitter. But I'm older now. Many years have passed and in truth, I'd be delighted to meet Matthew.
"I think it is something that needs to be done for both our sakes - a way to lay old ghosts to rest. It would help both of us.
"In the beginning, I was very angry. Did Matthew get off lightly because of who he was? In the end, he got the same punishment he would have got if he had run over cattle.
"For almost nine years I would shy away from watching any of his movies. I wouldn't look at a news article if he was in it. I just couldn't face it."
However, over time, wheelchair-bound Martin has been able to forgive the husband of SARAH JESSICA PARKER and believes they can help each other.
He adds, "You can't replace a mother or sister, but I know for certain they would not want any bitterness.
"I can understand why Matthew hasn't been in contact. He seems to accept he was in the wrong and probably wondered if he would be ripped apart. I want Matthew to know I forgive him. I believe we need to talk about things - we owe each other that."
And it seems Broderick is planning to apologise in person when he visits Ireland with his family this summer (03).21/05/2003 17:17
