Malaysian Censors Ok Mel's Passion
Censors in Malaysia have determined that only Christians should be allowed to see MEL GIBSON's controversial THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST and have selected certain cinemas in a bid to make sure non-believers miss out.
The film was expected to be banned in Malaysia, where the censorship of blockbusters has been extreme in the past, but the predominantly Muslim watchdogs accept the film is important to Christians.
Last week (ends09JUL04), the government decreed that the film could be shown in specific theatres and that cinemagoers should be vetted for their religious beliefs.
The authorities also demanded that no posters or publicity material be erected to advertise the film. The harrowing film, which stars JIM CAVIEZEL and JESUS CHRIST, has been a massive hit around the world, despite initial concerns that it was anti-Semitic.12/07/2004 01:48
