Lucas Felt Sure Phantom Menace Would Be A Flop

STAR WARS creator GEORGE LUCAS was convinced his return to the sci-fi saga with EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE was a huge mistake throughout filming - because the project resembled a DISNEY film.

Lucas feared the film would be too family-friendly and not gritty enough for Star Wars fans, but he was proved wrong.

He says, "I said, 'Phantom Menace is not going to work because I'm making it about a 10-year-old boy, and nobody is going to want to see this.'

"It's like one of these Disney movies or BENJI movies. People don't want that - they want to see DARTH VADER, and I'm not giving them Darth Vader."
