Loretta Lynn And James Brown Honoured
Legendary musicians JAMES BROWN and LORETTA LYNN have been awarded with KENNEDY CENTER HONORS lifetime achievement awards in Nashville, America.
Stars lined up to pay tribute to the recipients - who also included comedian CAROL BURNETT, director MIKE NICHOLS and violinist ITZHAK PERLMAN - at Sunday (07DEC03) night's ceremony.
Lynn received a rapturous welcome in the country music capital - she accepted her award from actress SISSY SPACEK, who played her in the 1980 movie COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER, before hearing a medley of her songs played by REBA McENTIRE, LYLE LOVETT, GARTH BROOKS, TRISHA YEARWOOD and PATTY LOVELESS.
A galaxy of stars queued up to pay tribute to godfather of soul Brown, including rapper LL COOL J and ANASTACIA.
LL Cool J said, "You broke down mental and social barriers and made it possible for me, a black kid from Queens, to stand in front of presidents and say, 'Say it loud, I'm black and I'm proud.' "
THE GRADUATE director Nichols was treated to a comic musical rendition by actors including MERYL STREEP and PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN.
All recipients were seated in a presidential box with American leader GEORGE W BUSH, his wife LAURA BUSH and his parents, former PRESIDENT GEORGE BUSH and BARBARA BUSH.08/12/2003 17:07
