Leigh Hopes Abortion Movie Swayed Us Voters
British director MIKE LEIGH hopes his controversial movie VERA DRAKE encouraged more American voters to support Senator JOHN KERRY rather than anti-abortion President GEORGE W BUSH.
Leigh ensured the VENICE GOLDEN LION-winning movie surfaced at the time of the US Presidential elections earlier this month (02NOV04) so that pro-life Republicans faced a moral dilemma after watching the movie, about illegal abortions in 1950's London.
He explains, "When we decided to go ahead and make this film, we calculated it would surface around the time of the election.
"I hope it's a film that confronts the audience with a complex moral problem through the way we look at perceptions of good and criminality. I hope that it will contribute to any debate that takes place on matters surrounding IT."22/11/2004 14:01
