Leary Upsets Catholics

Comedian DENIS LEARY has upset Catholic groups after mocking Christmas during his TV special DENIS LEARY'S MERRY F#%$IN' CHRISTMAS.

The RESCUE ME star, 48, jokes about lesbian nuns, the origins of Christmas and sings a song by OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL SUFFERING CHURCH CHOIR about a prostitute.

In one segment, Leary says, "Tonight we celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus, whose mom, Mary, just happens to be a virgin - even after she apparently gave birth to Jesus. At least that is what the Catholic Church would have you believe.

"TOM CRUISE is taking a lot of s**t for belonging to a religion, Scientology, that believes aliens came to this planet 75 million years ago. That is nothing. I was raised Catholic. We believe Mary was a virgin and Jesus ended up walking on water, creating a bottomless jug of wine and rising from the dead."

After hearing Leary's jokes, BILL DONOHUE, president of the Catholic League For Religious Ad Civil Rights, fumes, "Hate speech dressed in humorous garb is still hate speech. Leary is obviously bedeviled by some disorder but nothing excuses this crap."

Donohue's colleague and Catholic League spokeswoman KIERA McCAFFREY adds, "Going after the Blessed Mother is the kind of thing that really gets our backs up."

In defence, TONY FOX from the Comedy Central TV channel, says, "Comedy Central is an adult network and we think Denis Leary has the right to speak freely about what he thinks is funny. We don't cave to pressure and we're not pulling the show off the air."

Lighten up dazy, a joke is a joke, whether its blasphemous, dirty, or racial, is an indicator of the mentality of the joke teller. I never liked Leary and his holier than thou attitude but for the most part its all a facade. He does it on porpose. He's a shock Comedian. If we had to get rid of all the shock jocks in the world, it would be a very boring place. Just change the channel, most of his fans don't even take him serious, why should you?

Ah, everyone thinks Leary had to have been lonely as a child. Here's some reality for ya!He talks about getting shot in the head with an arrow, by his brother, when they were out playing with a friend. When they were children. Old material. You're probably too young to know it, or else you wouldn't have said anything about his childhood. To reiterate what others have told you, if you don't like him, you don't have to watch him. Those of us that do and enjoy his comedy, take him with a grain of salt. Leary is not the only comedian who grew up Catholic and rips on the religion. Try George Carlin. In one of his best lines he mentions Catholics, "...which I was until I reached the age of reason...", and goes on from there about worshipping the Sun (because he can see it) rather than God, and praying to Joe Pesci. The Catholic church takes itself much too seriously.

How disgusting that you would try to take the joy out of this wonderful season. This is a holy season which brngs many people together. I am not a catholic anymore, however, I feel the disrepect that you show towards them for tmheir beliefs is terrible and an atrocity. You truly are dispicable and a piece of worthless human trash. It saddens me to think of the childhood that you must have had and the lonely christmases that you endured. We are all a product of our environment and this is surely speaking of the type of environment that your parents provided for you....how truly sad that parents would not teach acceptance to their children, love and kindness. How truly miserable you are to displace that misery on people that at least cling to something moralistic.

Oh no! A COMEDIAN dares to (gasp) MOCK a belief system! The humanity! Why can't people of other beliefs keep them to themselves and give quiet lip service to MY sensibilities, if only we could get rid of that pesky first amendment... I bet Dennis Leary would be more accepting of Catholic beliefs if they were more accepting of everyone else’s beliefs, like birth control, gay marriage, and euthanasia. BTW he was raised CATHOLIC, so his “disgusting” morals (as defined by Christian dogma, no doubt) can be squarely blamed on Catholics. Jesus was born in summer, happy solstice.
