Kiwis Hit Back At Cleese's 'Suicide Capital' Comments
LATEST: A New Zealand city has hit back at recent visitor JOHN CLEESE, after the English actor described Palmerston North as the "suicide capital" of the country. The FAWLTY TOWERS funnyman toured New Zealand last year (05) with his MY LIFE, TIMES AND CURRENT MEDICAL PROBLEMS production and lambasted the North Island city. Cleese wrote in his online diary, "If you wish to kill yourself but lack the courage to, I think a visit to Palmerston North will do the trick. We stayed in a little motel, the weather was grotty, the theatre was a nasty shape and the audience was very strange to play to. We had a thoroughly, bloody miserable time there and we were so happy to get out." Popular Kiwi personality JOHN CLARKE, who was born in Palmerston North, was furious to hear Cleese's opinion of his believed hometown and has urged the local council to rename the city's landfill tip. Clarke fumes, "The City Council should name its Awapuni Landfill after John Cleese so all manner of c**p is happily recycled."
