Johnson's Punk Start

JACK JOHNSON had to keep his folk ambitions secret when he first started playing music - because he was in a punk band.

The singer eventually managed to break away to make the more gentle guitar music that has seen him build up an impressive fanbase, particularly in America, Britain and Australia.

He explains, "We'd play all this hard-core punk in the garage at my brother's house. Then quietly at night, I'd learn how to play CAT STEVENS, NEIL YOUNG and JIMMY BUFFETT."
