Jackson's Charity Single Causes Confusion

The future of MICHAEL JACKSON's Hurricane Katrina charity single has been thrown into doubt, following claims many of the stars billed to appear on the track have no intention of contributing.

MARIAH CAREY, JAY-Z, R KELLY, LAURYN HILL, JAMES BROWN, WYCLEF JEAN, LENNY KRAVITZ and eight other artists were named as contributors to FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART when Jackson announced the track following August's (05) tragedy.

And while Brown's representatives have acknowledged that the funk superstar will appear, they have disclosed to the Los Angeles Times that Kelly has already dropped out.

And LAURA SWANSON, who is senior vice president of publicity at Carey's label Island Def Jam, says, "I don't believe Michael's done any recording for his benefit single. At least not that I've heard of."

A publicist who reportedly works with one of the artists on Jackson's list tells the newspaper, "It's going nowhere. We had one phone call and nothing has happened since, and I'd be surprised at this point if it did. We're not really wanting anything to do with Michael right now anyway.

"A lot of people on that list found out about their commitment when the release came out."

However, Jackson's spokesperson RAYMONE K BAIN insists the project, which was announced on 6 September (05), is definitely going ahead.

She says, "The project is continuing on a fast track as it has been less than a month since Mr Jackson announced his plans regarding his Katrina Relief effort... Mr Jackson looks forward to the participation of the artists whose goals and objectives are the same as his."

Jackson is currently in London working on the track.
