Isaac Hayes Is A Survivor

Legendary soul singer ISAAC HAYES is still fuming about being ripped off by his record label STAX - but he's proved he has staying power.

The SHAFT singer wrote many smash hits for other artists while with the label in the '60s and '70s, and has never received any royalties. His music has been sampled more than 140 times by contemporary artists including PUBLIC ENEMY and DR DRE.

The 60-year-old says, "Man, I got screwed over that. Screwed royally. But I can't talk about it because I'm going to write a book, I'm going to call names and every damned thing.

"I had to get rid of the anger and all that s***. Because I'm being beat up every day I hear my tunes on the radio. I don't get paid."

But Isaac is used to hard times, especially when he was declared bankrupt in 1976 following a decline in album sales.

He says, "I made up my mind: well, I started with nothing, so I'm used to nothing.

But I didn't jump off a roof. I stayed in the public's view, and I faced it."
