An inquiry has opened into the death of Italian porn star MOANA POZZI - 11 years after her family announced to a shocked world that she had lost a secret battle against liver cancer.
Pozzi first grabbed attention in FREDERICO FELLINI's 1985 movie GINGER AND FRED, and went onto to star in numerous hardcore adult movies before moving into the mainstream as a respected commentator on Italian TV.
But rumours have abounded since her 1994 demise that she faked her own death in a bid to start a new life - and conspiracy theories have been supported by a surprising lack of proof normally in evidence following a high-profile death.
There were no witnesses to the 33-year-old's final days in a hospital in Lyons, France, no photographs and no grave with her name on it. Theorists have focused on Pozzi's devoutly Catholic family as the force behind her disappearance, because they reportedly opposed her outrageous career.
Rome's public prosecutor has now finally been spurred into launching a public investigation following the publication of an investigative book by BRUNETTO FANTAUZZI, the former head of Moana's fan club, into her death.
Fantauzzi tells Italian newspaper Il Messaggero, "Shortly before she died, Moana intimated to me that she had the intention of giving up her work... She was afraid the decision could create problems because a lot of money was banked on her.
"In my book I don't claim that Moana is alive; I only ask that somebody demonstrate how she died."
But Pozzi's family are furious about the new inquiry.
MAURO BIUZZI, the executor of her will, says, "No judge has called me; all the papers relating to her death were submitted in 1994. This is nothing but a publicity stunt, adding suffering to suffering, and the family has already suffered enough from this sad spectacle."
