Imagine Britain's Favourite Song

JOHN LENNON's iconic track IMAGINE has been named the UK's number one song in a poll conducted by Virgin Radio.

It beat out competition from THE BEATLES' songs HEY JUDE and LET IT BE to land the number one spot in the poll, in which 7,000 listeners cast their votes.

In fourth place was ONE by Irish band U2 followed by ROBBIE WILLIAMS' ANGELS.

The Beatles also had the most number of songs appear in the top 500, with 33 entries, followed by the ROLLING STONES who had 17 and U2 with 15. DAVID BOWIE and QUEEN had 14 entries each.

Newcomer JAMES BLUNT came in at number 10 with YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL, making him the highest placed new act. British band KEANE had four entries.

Virgin Radio's BEN JONES says of Lennon, "His writing, especially with PAUL McCARTNEY, is possibly the country's greatest ever musical export and he clearly still holds a special place in the nation's heart."

2005 saw the 25th anniversary of Lennon's death. He was killed outside his New York apartment by a crazed fan on 8 December 1980.

The Top 10 favourite songs are:

1. IMAGINE - JOHN LENNON

2. HEY JUDE - THE BEATLES

3. LET IT BE - THE BEATLES

4. ONE - U2

5. ANGELS - ROBBIE WILLIAMS

I am not surprised that the top three songs are Beatles songs. But I am most pleased that following in number four is a song by my favs, U2. Yet ONE is such an interesting choice, as though it's to me one of the sweetest melodies that fills up my senses, it is a song of frustration in love and understanding, and that we are ONE, but not the same. But it deals with this frustration and disappointment in such an honest yet tender way that it like a tuning fork resonates in the heart. And like the lion share of what Bono writes encourages us to carry each other and come together. And has become the anthem to the awesome campaign to Make Poverty History. So it's such a blessing to have this song being honored by a vote of the people, directly behind the greatest band of all time. Great choice UK!

It is great to see that the late and great John Lennon still tops any chart 25 years after he was tragically killed by that sick idiot. It is also great to see two Beatles' songs close behind. I am sure U2 must feel highly honoured to be so closely behind the Beatles, because I am sure they, and all the others, know that they would not be involved in making their own music if it had not been for the Beatles.
