Hotel Rwanda Director Takes Over Cancelled Washington Film
HOTEL RWANDA writer and director TERRY GEORGE will resurrect cancelled film AMERICAN GANGSTER, only six months after the thriller was pulled by studio bosses.
OSCAR-winners DENZEL WASHINGTON and BENICIO DEL TORO were set to play 1970s drug dealer FRANK LUCAS and detective RICHIE ROBERTS respectively in the biopic, which also was known under the working title of TRU BLU.
Only weeks before filming was scheduled to start, UNIVERSAL STUDIOS ditched the film, following "creative differences" with director ANTOINE FUQUA.
George has now reportedly been given permission to make the film on half of the originally-allocated $100 million (GBP53 million) budget.
Washington is currently rehearsing for the Broadway, New York, production of JULIUS CAESAR and has no further film roles lined up.29/03/2005 02:28
