High School Musical On A High

The soundtrack to Disney's smash hit TV show HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL has topped the US album charts after seven weeks on release. The compilation sold 101,000 copies last week to topple JAHEIM's GHETTO CLASSICS, which falls to number 10 on the new chart. In early February (05), BREAKING FREE by ANDREW SEELEY, ZAC EFRON and VANESSA ANNE HUDGENS, which features on the High School Musical soundtrack, became the biggest one-week gainer in the history of the Hot 100 singles chart when it jumped from 86 to four. Now, the album has become the first TV soundtrack to top the charts since MIAMI VICE spent 11 weeks at the top in 1985 and 1986. It's a child-friendly top three - debuting at number two is the latest KIDZ BOP album, which features children singing covers of recent hits, while JACK JOHNSON's CURIOUS GEORGE soundtrack album slips to number three. MARY J BLIGE's THE BREAKTHROUGH stands firm at four on the new chart and British singer/songwriter JAMES BLUNT rises to five. Meanwhile, acclaimed Brits the ARCTIC MONKEYS' debut, WHATEVER PEOPLE SAY I AM, THAT'S WHAT I'M NOT, failed to set the US charts alight. The album shot to top of the UK charts last month (FEB06), becoming the fastest-selling debut ever - selling 360,000 copies in a week. The album managed a relatively poor 34,000 sales last week in America to debut at number 24.
