Hawkins Hates Contemporary British Music

THE DARKNESS frontman JUSTIN HAWKINS has branded British music "a joke".

The I BELIEVE IN A THING CALLED LOVE singer insists his UK rock contemporaries produce boring music which fails to interest international audiences.

And Hawkins attributes the success of his band to their preoccupation with artists and groups from the 1960s and 1970s when the music industry was a far more vibrant community.

He says, "British music is the laughing stock of the world. It's such f**king dreary bulls**t.

"It's such a cliche to say, 'We were so bored of the industry around us that we started our own band!'

"But it's no coincidence that all our influences are from a long time ago."

How right he is. I worked in music in the 70s and 80s and although we all worked our butts off, it was bloody good fun. Now if you go to any of the music biz awards evenings (Brits, Nordoff Robbins, Ivors, etc.) you might as well be at a convention of accountants and lawyers. Where are all the colourful characters? It seems to me the music business is now all about the business and not very much about the music.

I love The Darkness, obviously, but Justin just needs to be less narrow-minded about different music styles. He may not be into bands like Coldplay and people like James Blunt, but they are simply expressing their life through their own style of music. If he keeps it up, he may find himself losing alot of credibility among people in the UK music sceneSim, Sydney Australia

I could not agree with Justin more. Some of the greatest music came out of the 70's. Permission to Land was a refreshing change that brought back memories of when rock and roll was not only great to listen to, but had an element of playfullness and fun. Keep up the good work.....waiting on the new Darkness album to arrive.
