Golden Pond To Close After Jones' Slow Recuperation
LATEST: The New York production of ON GOLDEN POND will close indefinitely on Sunday (26JUN05) because its star, JAMES EARL JONES is unable to recover from pneumonia in time to save the show.
Earlier this week (begs20JUN05) producer JEFFREY FINN said there was a strong chance the Broadway play at the Cort Theater would close, and the cast and crew were keeping their fingers crossed Jones would recuperate from the illness he was struck down with on 15 June (05).
However, Jones regrettably is too ill to return to his role as professor NORMAN THAYER, and his absence from the show has caused such poor ticket sales, the theatre company cannot afford to continue.
In a statement released on Thursday (23JUN05), Finn says, "The entire On Golden Pond family is heartbroken to close this production prematurely, and it's especially disappointing that James Earl Jones won't be with us for our final performances.
"(Jones' doctors said) the seriousness of recuperating from pneumonia would prevent his return until sometime in August."24/06/2005 09:33
