Funnyman Chong Begins Prison Term

Movie funnyman TOMMY CHONG reported to a minimum security prison near Bakersfield, California, on Wednesday (08OCT03) to serve his nine-month sentence for conspiring to sell drug paraphernalia on the internet.

The 65-year-was sentenced last month (SEP03), but his attorneys are already preparing to argue for his release pending appeal, and a 16 October (03) hearing has been set so he can request a release. He is appealing his sentence to the 3rd US Circuit Court of Appeals.

At his original sentencing, Chong - best known as half of the comedy duo CHEECH AND CHONG in the 'stoner' movies of the same name - said he got carried away with his fictional persona, but had given up smoking marijuana and wanted to use to his stardom to crusade against drugs.

Assistant US Attorney MARY HOUGHTON had argued Chong grew rich glamorising drug use.
