Fiennes Breaks The Silence
Actor RALPH FIENNES found a great source of amusement as he sat in silence during a radio broadcast of a classical concert - his leather jacket kept squeaking.
The SPIDER star was one of hundreds who had to endure the BBC SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA's botched performance of JOHN CAGE's work entitled 4'33', during which the musicians are instructed not to play a single note.
The silence - which is required from audiences at classical shows - was repeatedly broken by muffled giggles, sighs and coughs at London's BARBICAN CENTRE, and Fiennes discovered he too was adding to the hubbub.
He says, "It made me realise there is no such thing as pure silence. I was very conscious while we were all sitting there of the squeaking of my leather jacket."20/01/2004 13:48
