Film Franchises That Go On Forever 4307936 News

The Hobbit trilogy has been criticised by some viewers for having too little content spread too thinly over the course of too many films. Originally, the idea was to split the 1937 J. R. R. Tolkien story over two films; however, in 2012, director Peter Jackson confirmed his plans for a third film; some six years after the two-film decision had been made.

Peter Jackson
Director of The Hobbit, Peter Jackson, originally thought the franchise would only spread across two films

Was this to enhance viewers’ experience of the story or was it because three films make more money than two? Audiences will never know. They will instead have to settle with a narrative with a lot less to say than The Lord of the Rings trilogy over the same number of motion pictures; with the final chapter in the piece, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, released in the UK on 12 December.

Here’s the trailer.

Of course, The Hobbit spanning three films is actually quite concise if being compared to some franchises that have milked their cinematic cash cow for as long as possible.

Here are a few long film franchise delights.

Fast and the Furious

The Fast and the Furious franchise is awaiting the release of its seventh film in the series in 2015. Centred round illegal street racing, bad guys, good guys and heists, it has earned a whopping $2.3billion since 2001 and is Universal Studios biggest franchise of all time.

But are these films any good?

The first film, The Fast and the Furious did relatively well with critics but the next three, 2 Fast 2 Furious, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and Fast & Furious, were not very well-received. Instead of being downhearted, the studio picked itself up and produced arguably the best in the franchise so far, Fast Five.

Rotten Tomatoes said: 'Sleek, loud and over the top, Fast Five proudly embraces its brainless action thrills and injects new life into the franchise.’ Fast & Furious 6 also received positive reviews as well and, whether film seven does well or not, it was confirmed in June 2014 that the late Paul Walker’s brother had been cast as a new character for Fast and Furious 8.

The Expendables

Unwilling to let his film roles get as old as him, Sylvester Stallone came up with a way to keep the burning flames of action heroism alive: The Expendables.

The first instalment in 2010 was jam-packed with older generation hard men including Stallone himself, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Eric Roberts and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Along with mixed criticism came a Golden Raspberry Award for Sylvester Stallone in the Worst Director category.

However, that didn’t stop the franchise making a second and third film picking up veteran martial arts actor, Jean-Claude Van Damme in The Expendables 2 and Harrison Ford, Antonio Banderas and Wesley Snipes in The Expendables 3, due out in UK cinemas on 4 August.

Last year it was also confirmed that Expendables 4 would be released. Excited? Check out the trailer for The Expendables 3 here first.

Pirates of the Caribbean

Jack Sparrow has been whispering ‘ay, ay, matey’ for four Pirates’ films now with the fifth due for release in 2017. A huge financial success, the Caribbean franchise has earned Disney a whopping $3billion since 2003. But, while money is clearly pouring in for this swashbuckling enterprise, reviews have slowly dipped downwards as the films have gone on.

The original trilogy, Curse of the Black Pearl,Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End, started off well with Curse of the Black Pearl winning over sceptical critics and Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow highly praised. However, the second and third films fared less well with reviewers and the stand alone fourth instalment, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, was criticised for being confusing and incoherent.

But Disney feared not and has gone for a fifth release, perhaps believing that if it can’t win over commentators, it will at least take a win from people’s pockets.

Vin Diesel Talks This Summer's Weirdest Bromance 4296423 News

Yet in conversation with Access Hollywood, Diesel summed up the relationship between his and Bradley Cooper's characters in Guardians of the Galaxy with equal simplicity: "They love each other".

Rocket and GrootThe unlikely duo were seen wreaking havoc in the film's latest trailer

In what is possibly the most epic bromance of the summer, Vin Diesel plays a humanoid tree named Groot, who is only capable of saying the same phrase over and over: "I'm Groot", whilst Bradley Cooper lends his voice to a trash-talking mercenary raccoon named Rocket. Amazingly, the two actors never worked together in the studio, and Diesel the CGI team and director James Gunn with making sure their on-screen relationship was out of this world.

Diesel said that his motivation for taking on the role was his children, and he was thrilled that they loved the finished product.

"I don't think [Marvel] thought that I would do the role, but when I got it, when I got the concept art, I went home and I showed it to my family and I asked them, 'Which character do you think they want daddy to play?' and the kids pointed to the tree and there was something in that moment where I went, 'This is going to tap into people in a way that I can't even explain. Jump cut to [my kids] seeing the movie, loving the movie, imitating Groot and Rocket and everybody…my kids now look at trees differently."

Diesel in his human form on the set of Fast & Furious 7

Certainly the role is (literally) worlds apart from the kind of films Vin is normally seen in; he has just finished filming Fast & Furious 7, in which he plays the lead role of Dominic Toretto. Yet an action hero is an action hero in any galaxy, and Guardians of the Galaxy is shaping up to be a summer treat for sci-fi and action fans worldwide.

“Marvel’s @Guardians is magnificent. Hilarious, touching, action packed, I don’t think I could’ve liked it more. @JamesGunn killed it. Wow. Thank god that movie was good cause my night got decidedly worse right after that. Wedged my car good.… I don't like to take advantage of my awesome position, but this time I made an exception. Just RSVP'd to see @Guardians again after #SDCC,” wrpte Germain Lussier of Slashfilm, over a good few Tweets.

Steven Weintraub of Collider tweeted, “GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY opens up the Marvel universe in a great way. Movie is awesome & extremely funny. Congrats @JamesGunn. You did it. And anyone wondering if a talking racoon and tree wouldn't work, they have some of the best scenes and I loved both of them. #GUARDIANS.”

And finally, Devin Faraci of BadAssDigest tweeted, “Groot is the new star of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I really liked GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. The characters work so well together. Gunn nails space opera. I'm excited for GUARDIANS 2 not for plot reasons but bc the heavy lifting of establishing everything is done and the characters can sing. Weird thing: whileGUARDIANS has the most Thanos-wank yet it's the Marvel movie that stands most on its own. It feels whole.”

Fast & Furious 7 "Family" Announces Wrap, Thanks Fans & Mourns Paul Walker 4282669 News

The cast and crew of Fast & Furious 7 have announced the film is finally wrapped and it's certainly been a labour of love and loss. The announcement was made via the Fast & Furious Facebook page and thanked fans for their continued support. It also paid tribute to the late actor Paul Walker who died midway through filming in November 2013.

Paul Walker died in November 2013 and the cast and crew have paid tribute to the late actor.

The statement began by thanking fans for their support. It reads "We felt the love and strength from our fans throughout this journey, and it's because of you that we got here." The cast and crew claimed it was only by listening to what fans wanted that they found the strength to go on and decided to make the rest of the film even without Walker's presence. They wrote "Our family is big and strong but it won't ever quite be whole again without Paul."

The role of Vin Diesel as a leader was also mentioned throughout the statement. The cast and crew felt it was Diesel who had ensured the project continued after Walker's death. The statement read: "From the start, Vin has been our leader who feels what's right for FAST in his gut and in his heart. When we had to stop production last year, Vin gathered us back together and moved us forward when we needed it most. He led us to this day."

Diesel also acknowledged the film's wrap and added a short statement on his own Facebook page. He described filming as a "life changing experience" and added that, thanks to the support of fans, Walker would be proud. This sentiment was also echoed in the cast and crew's statement in which they wrote: "All of us - those who've been here from the start and those whose first FAST film is 7 - wanted to create a special film for him and for you. We believe we have."

The movie had to be delayed due to the tragic death of Walker last November. The 40-year-old actor died last year when the car in which he had been travelling crashed into a lamppost at a speed of 100 mph. Both Walker and the driver, Roger Rodas, died at the scene of the accident. Fast & Furious 7 was in the middle of filming at the time of Walker's death and further filming was postponed until April 2014.

It's still not certain how the film will deal with Walker's death and it is rumoured his character will be retired instead of killed. It's generally believed the footage Walker filmed before his death will be used and additional footage comprised of using his voice, CGI and stand-ins will be created. The stand-ins include Walker's brothers, Caleb and Cody, who were also mentioned in the message. The message read "Caleb and Cody joined us to honour their brother and help complete his work."

Fast & Furious 7 will be released in cinemas on April 3rd 2015.

The cast of forthcoming Marvel movie 'Guardians of the Galaxy'; Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper; talk about the new film in a short featurette.

'They're the thieves, the bounty hunters and the neglected', Zoe explains of their characters. 'It's not a typical superhero movie.' Chris adds: 'Peter Quill is the only human in this crazy world. He doesn't have superhuman strength or the abillity to fly but he uses his cunning and his charm to get himself out of situations.' It appears to be the first Marvel film that focuses more on comedy than action, with Bradley explaining, 'There's a lot of humour in this one and a lot of heart. There's nothing like it, that's for sure.'
