Elton's Musical Too 'Hurtful' For Thatcher
SIR ELTON JOHN is relieved former British Prime Minister MARGARET THATCHER is too elderly to see his London musical BILLY ELLIOTT, because he thinks the show would be "hurtful" for her to watch. The stage show is set amongst a backdrop of the year-long miners' strikes in the early 1980s - when Thatcher was running Britain - and depicts a gloomy part of the country's political history. John says, "It would probably be very hurtful to her and I don't think it would do her any good to see it. "We're telling the story from a miners' perspective and Maggie was a very hated person to them. They went through some terribly hard times." One scene of the musical features miners singing about Thatcher while an inflatable version of the prime minister is bobbed about the stage.
