Elia Kazan Dies

Pioneering director ELIA KAZAN has died at the age of 94.

The OSCAR-winning moviemaker, most famed for ON THE WATERFRONT and A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE passed away yesterday (28SEP03) at his home in New York, according to his lawyer, FLORIA LASKY.

Five of the plays he staged won Pulitzer Prizes for their authors, and he won ACADEMY AWARDS for On the Waterfront and GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT.

Kazan came under fire in the 1950's during the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) probe, when he "named names" of alleged Communists.

In 1999, the Motion Picture Academy presented him with an honorary Oscar for his achievements, which revived the controversy among actors, writers, directors and producers who were blacklisted in Hollywood as a result of the HUAC investigation.
