Chaplin Kit Raises Record Cash At Auction
A hat-and-cane set worn by legendary comic actor CHARLIE CHAPLIN sold for just under $140,000 (GBP77,800) at auction on Sunday (25JUN06). The $139,250 bid broke the record for the most-ever paid for a Chaplin hat-and-can set, according to a spokeswoman for Los Angeles auction house Bonhams + Butterfields. The identity of the purchaser has not been revealed. Also under the hammer alongside the 32-inch (81-centimetre) bamboo cane and bowler hat was the two-headed llama from the original DR DOLITTLE movie which raised $4,780 (GBP2,655), a book inscribed by BEATLES legend JOHN LENNON which raised $9,560 ($5,310) and a Disney celluloid picture from SNOW WHITE THE SEVEN DWARFS which fetched $8,365 (GBP4,650).
