Chainsaw Massacre Slices Through Box Office Competition

The remake of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE has become the latest blood-drenched movie to top the American box office, after debuting with an estimated $29.1 million (GBP18.1 million).

QUENTIN TARANTINO's bloody vengeance saga KILL BILL: VOLUME 1, the previous weekend's number one movie, slipped to second place with $12.5 million (GBP7.8 million), lifting its 10-day total to $43.3 million (GBP27 million).

RUNAWAY JURY, starring GENE HACKMAN, DUSTIN HOFFMAN, JOHN CUSACK and RACHEL WEISZ, opened in third place with $12.1 million (GBP7.5 million).

After a strong debut in limited release a week earlier, CLINT EASTWOOD's MYSTIC RIVER - starring SEAN PENN and TIM ROBBINS - expanded to nationwide release and came in at number five with $10.36 million (GBP6.4 million).

But the box office joys of the weekend were not to be had by all: CATE BLANCHETT's VERONICA GUERIN, in which she plays a real life Irish journalist slain during an investigation of Dublin druglords, bombed with $603,000 (GBP376,875).
