Brokeback Author Slates Oscars

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN author ANNIE PROULX has slated the Academy Awards for giving the Best Picture Oscar to CRASH at this year's (06) presentation ceremony. In an essay published by British newspaper The Guardian, Proulx describes voters as "out of touch" and "segregated" from current issues, and insists they were easily influenced by Crash's production company Lions Gate Entertainment. She writes, "Roughly 6,000 film industry voters, most in the Los Angeles area, many living cloistered lives behind wrought-iron gates or in deluxe rest homes, out of touch not only with the shifting larger culture and the yeasty ferment that is America these days, but also out of touch with their own segregated city, decide which films are good. "And rumour has it that Lions Gate inundated the academy voters with DVD copies of 'Trash' - excuse me, Crash - a few weeks before the ballot deadline. "Next year we can look to the awards for controversial themes on the punishment of adulterers with a branding iron in the shape of the letter A, runaway slaves, and the debate over free silver."

I sat through "Brokeback Mountain" and frankly I don't see what all the fuss was about. Honestly, it was a "so-so" movie, nothing more. I also saw 'Crash' and that was a GREAT movie. It's obvious that the Brokeback author has confused a "shocking" movie with a "good" movie. Take away the schock factor and all that's left is a somewhat dull, slow-moving melodrama.

Why is she so upset; "Brokeback Mountain" was the clear winner. Had "Brokeback" won the Oscar, it would be just a little too much for the already over-the-top themed film for those in "Fly-over" country to stomach. The producers and writers already turned up the agenda heat enough and got away with it, winning the Oscar would be way overselling the agenda. This way, coming in second, allows "Brokeback" to retain its "underdog" status. Agenda media must fly under the radar most of the time in order to slowly move society, only now and then creating a stir (as "Brokeback" did). Trying to move it too fast can have a backlash. "Brokeback" was the clear winner this year. Now the next film similar in contextual theme and talented writing and directing to "Brokeback" can go just a small step forward in normalizing a sexual fetish as a legitimate human relationship. There are many S&M and insestual, even man/boy couples waiting anxiously to be recognized as normal. We're not there yet but thanks to "Brokeback" and its loss of the Oscar, we're getting closer. Brokeback helped break the Oscar "pink" barrier. Keep it going!

I will watch crash on HBO or one of the pay channels someday, sounds like it's worth my time. I will watch Brokeback Mountain the day after I watch Fahrenheit 911, which is never. I must have a closed mind !! Hollywood is the reason we are being attacked by the Mooselims,, they think that we are all gay !

Mmmmm.....why is this cat so uppity? I mean broke back mountain is a movie about gay cowboys, or in this case gay sheep headrers. I remember that southpark (the cartoon) did this premise about 3 or 4 years ago. I laughed my arse off then because the it was just so rediculous...."gay woyboys"...That's hysterical! Uhm...And I laughed my arse off again when i saw the trailer for this flick. Talk about art imitateing life...or in this case art imitateing a cartoon. Ha! Way to go Hollywood.

I don't care about gay cowboy movies so I don't care if they won anything. The movies that are good and don't even get consideration like "The Passion" which turned out to be a mega blockbuster is never mentioned. From the first time Brokeback came on the screen the reviews raved about how wonderful it was. But after months of showings hardly anyone had seen it. Except maybe all the gay people. I am sorry your feeling were hurt because it didn't win, but, lets face it, most people don't care about movies that are anti family and promote the gay life style unless they are just trying to be politically correct to save face. So next time write a decent movie and maybe you will win.

Sore loser. We can now see how the politically correct people force their views on the rest of society. Everything is crap that doesn't agree with their point of view.I'm sorry about the Brokebutt award count. I'm sorry it got any awards at all! It should have received zero.

Wow! Talk about a sore loser. What about the fact that is was not a best movie, let alone a good movie. The only reason it got nominated is because a group of academy members, who are not representative of the movie going public, nominated it. Just because i6ts nominated does not mean it deserves to win. There was once a time when best picture were BEST PICTURES, Gone With the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, Chariots of Fire, etc., etc., etc. Now Hollywood producers put out what they want to, artsy-fartsy films, with little appeal to the majority population. Maybe thats why revenues are down. NJSTEVENH
