Bono To Lobby Chirac

Campaigning rocker BONO is planning a showdown with French President JACQUES CHIRAC, because the leader's agricultural policies are affecting his battle for fair trade in Africa.

The U2 frontman is thrilled by the $5 billion (GBP2.8 billion) aid package he secured by lobbying politicians at the G8 summit in July (05), but is now keen to ensure Africans are given the chance to trade in the international market and be fairly rewarded for their produce.

And he blames outdated policies protecting a few independent farmers, at the expense of the developing world.

The ELEVATION hitmaker says, "We've made progress on debt and aid and that must be celebrated. Trade will be an epic long-term battle.

"France is one of the biggest problems in reaching a trade deal.

"People are worried that dismantling the common agricultural policy (CAP) in Europe will really affect small French farmers. We don't think it should.

"The giant corporate farmers in America and Europe are receiving most of the subsidies.

"These subsidies are cruel to a farmer in the developing world who is trying to compete."

oh, amen. the policies are long outdated and i'm glad to see the pressure put on world leaders to update them. the west's selfish farming endeavors need to be addressed. I'm from the west (USA) and am proud of the work of our farmers, and feel for their plight, but also married a man who's farm had to grow a particular grain in the portion of their land to qualify for subsidy, and the grain went to seed and fallow and died just to be plowed under unharvested and planted again to qualify for the next subsidy. They eventually went bankrupt. But to sell our rice in these countries that could be growing their own, that is without excuse. Or our textiles. The WTO did not take the matters of developing countries seriously again this year. but in honorable fashion, the likes of DATA and (red) and even former President Clinton decided to work in a whole new paradyme on their behalf; that while we wait for the world and the world's leadership to catch up and see things from the poorest of poor land's perspective, the great and good work of commerce and the Global Health Forum can count for many redemptive moments and situations - one person, one village at a time. may Bono's time with Chirac prove fruitful. That is my prayer. sammi fredenburg
