Bono Applauds Finance Chiefs For Debt Cancellation

U2 frontman Bono has applauded a plan by international finance bosses to cancel $40 billion (GBP22.2 billion) worth of debt for developing nations.

The Vertigo hitmaker, 45, spoke yesterday (26SEP05) after the World Bank And The International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreed to wipe out the huge debt for 18 impoverished nations, including Bolivia, Ghana, Honduras, Niger, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia, months after their initial decision at the G8 Summit in Scotland in July (05).

Bono said the plan was a "great day for the poorest people on the planet".

He adds, "This is not a charity issue, this is a justice issue. (The) next injustice to be torn down is the bullying tactics of the World Trade Organisation (WTO)."
