Big Hit Ahoy: Depp's Pirate Film Is A Box Office Boost
JOHNNY DEPP's new swashbuckling adventure PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL has made a huge splash in Hollywood opening as one of the biggest films ever.
The high-seas epic, in which Depp is brilliant as eccentric buccaneer CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW, earned $13.5 million (GBP8.4 million on its opening day in America (09JUL03) - making it one of the top 10 biggest Wednesday openings ever.
The film even managed to top the first-day figures ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER's T3: RISE OF THE MACHINES netted last Wednesday (02JUL03).
What makes the first-day figures for Pirates even more impressive is the film opened during a non-holiday weekend, whereas films ahead of it on the top 10, like JURASSIC PARK III and INDEPENDENCE DAY, all had holiday help.
A spokeswoman for DISNEY, the studio behind the film, says, "We knew we had a pretty special film."11/07/2003 19:18
