Ben Lee Is King Of The Apras

Singer/songwriter BEN LEE was crowned king of Australia's music scene on Monday (05JUN06) when he picked up two trophies at the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) Music Awards. The CIGARETTES WILL KILL YOU hitmaker, 27, won Song Of The Year and Most Performed Australian Work for his catchy track CATCH MY DISEASE, off his hit album AWAKE IS THE NEW SLEEP, at the ceremony in Sydney's Four Seasons Hotel. Lee, who used to date Hollywood star CLAIRE DANES, accepted the award via videophone from the United States, where he is currently touring. He said, "When I was 14 I started making records, recording in my bedroom. I had no technology. I had no money, I didn't have a lot of style or technique but I had songs I believed in." Other winners on the night included MATCHBOX 20 heart-throb ROB THOMAS with Most Performed Foreign Work for LONELY NO MORE and JET discovered their hit track ARE YOU GONNA BE MY GIRL is continuing to dominate the international airwaves two years after its release when it was named Most Performed Work Overseas.
