Beckham Rescues British Olympic Bid

Soccer star David Beckham and his wife VICTORIA have joined British Prime Minister Tony Blair in Singapore to support Britain's bid to host the Olympic Games in 2012.

The Real Madrid star gave an impassioned speech at a star-studded reception last night (04JUL05) prior to Wednesday's (06JUL05) conference, which has been hailed as a pivotal moment, improving London's chances of hosting the prestigious sporting event.

He told guests including Blair and sporting legends SIRE STEVE REDGRAVE and BOBBY CHARLTON, "We are backing the bid because we believe in it.

"Obviously it's going to generate a lot of things for our country. I believe this is the only place it should be. It's going to inspire children, give them the chance to see an Olympics in our own country. That's why we should get it."
