Beckham Heads Tsunami Appeal
LATEST: Soccer superstar DAVID BECKHAM will front a worldwide appeal to raise money for children affected by last month's (26DEC04) devastating tsunami in South East Asia.
The 29-year-old, a hero to millions in the region, will record a television and radio plea for the UNITED NATION'S CHILDREN'S FUND (UNICEF) over the next couple of days asking people to give generously to the cause.
A UNICEF spokesperson says, "David has been deeply touched by this tragedy like millions of others and was determined to do his bit. He is aware of how fortunate he is and wanted to do everything he could to help.
"The appeal will focus on the kids but it will also be a general appeal. David was really keen to make the trip to Thailand but there is no way his football commitments would allow it."
A member of Beckham's entourage adds, "David is likely to channel his efforts through UNICEF and we're in early discussions at this stage to aid the relief effort."
This latest charity move comes on the back of rumours the REAL MADRID star will be named a UNITED NATIONS goodwill ambassador by Secretary General KOFI ANNAN.10/01/2005 14:01
