Beatles Guitar Going Under The Hammer

A guitar played by late BEATLES JOHN LENNON and GEORGE HARRISON is expected to fetch at least $500,000 (GBP277,000) at auction next month (17DEC04).

Harrison played the GIBSON SG during recording sessions for Fab Four's classic REVOLVER album in 1965 and 1966, as well as in promotional films for PAPERBACK WRITER and RAIN. The guitar was put to one side until Lennon picked it up again in 1968 during the WHITE ALBUM recording sessions.

Harrison then gave the instrument to BADFINGER member PETE HAM who kept it until he committed suicide in 1975. Ham's brother JOHN stored the guitar away until it was unearthed in 2002 as surviving band members prepared a Badfinger retrospective.

The guitar will be up for sale at New York's CHRISTIE'S auction house, with a spokesperson enthusing, "Guitars just don't come more important than this one. It's a real icon from the heyday of the world's biggest rock band."

A FENDER STRATOCASTER played by ERIC CLAPTON became the world's most expensive guitar earlier this year, and some experts predict that the Gibson SG could exceed the $948,960 (GBP527,200) selling price.
