American Psychiatric Association Criticises Cruise Over Drug Comments

LATEST: TOM CRUISE has been further criticised for slamming the consumption of drugs used to treat depression during a recent US TV interview - by the American Psychiatric Association (APA).

The mental health organisation has accused the WAR OF THE WORLDS star of behaving irresponsibly for labelling anti-depressant drugs a "pseudo science" during a chat with American TV newsman MATT LAUER on the TODAY show last week (ends24JUN05).

In a statement, the APA says: "It was irresponsible for Mr Cruise to use his movie publicity tour to promote his own ideological views... (and) deter people with mental illness from getting the help they need.

"Rigorous, published, peer-reviewed research clearly demonstrates that treatment (of mental illness) works.

"It is unfortunate that in the face of this remarkable scientific and clinical progress that a small number of individuals and groups persist in questioning its legitimacy."

Cruise has also recently blasted actress BROOKE SHIELDS for using anti-depressants.

No Kid's picture

No Kid

Tom Cruise needs to shut that pretty little mouth of his. Now he's saying there's no such thing as a chemical imbalance . . . Remember in the 70's when the Carter administration "freed" so many mentally imbalanced people from institutions? Homelesness and despair due to the mentally ill being denied treatment skyrocketed. These folks need treatment. What IS that treatment? Psychiatry (or psychology) and medications. Patting them on the head and telling them to get with the Scientology program isn't going to cut it. My fear is that folks who take this fool seriously will deny treatment and get worse. I wish he'd stick to making poor-to-mediocre movies and quit ramming himself and his c**kamamie ideas down our collecive throats.
