Academy Scraps Dramatic Emmy Awards Changes
The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has ditched the dramatic changes intended to speed up this year's (18SEP05) Emmy Awards - because they proved too costly and met with resistance from the industry guilds whose approval was required.
Four months ago (APR05) the academy board of governors announced they were replacing lengthy, live acceptance speeches with pre-taped, edited winners' comments.
They also considered scrapping certain writing and directing awards, after the show drew its second-lowest ratings ever last year (04) with just 14 million viewers.
But academy officials reviewed the changes on Monday (08AUG05) and concluded the improvements would not be significant enough to justify the costs required.
A statement from the academy says, "In effect, the amount of time being saved was not as much as originally thought and the costs incurred would be in excess of original projections."
