Abba Planned Musical With Cleese In 1980

ABBA teamed up with British comedian JOHN CLEESE to write a musical based around the Swedish legends' songs, years before the hit stage show MAMMA MIA.

Abba songwriters BENNY ANDERSSON and BJORN ULVANEUS met MONTY PYTHON star Cleese while holidaying in Barbados in 1980.

All three decided to set about bringing a musical to the stage, with the Abba stars writing the music and Cleese writing the script.

However, the idea was abandoned after a few meetings.

Andersson says, "We were thinking of setting the show in a room with a few people looking back on what has been, thinking about the future, that sort of thing, but in the end it didn't work out."
