OSCAR winner CATHERINE ZETA-JONES is poised to take over NICOLE KIDMAN's role in the BRAD PITT movie MR AND MRS SMITH.

The Welsh beauty is keen work with JENNIFER ANISTON's hunky husband after problems with Kidman's hectic shooting schedule forced her to consider pulling out the project.

However, producers are scrambling to find a way round the difficulties of Kidman's workload so she can play opposite OCEAN'S ELEVEN hunk Pitt in the story of a bored married couple who discover they are both assassins.

If Zeta-Jones does end up in the lead role it will be the first time she has shared screen time with Pitt. They worked together on animated flick SINBAD: LEGEND OF THE SEVEN SEAS, but never met until its premiere.
