Hollywood actress RENEE ZELLWEGER has blasted modern society for being obsessed with consumerism, something she admits "scares the c**p" out of her.

The BRIDGET JONES star worries the western world is becoming increasingly conservative.

Zellweger, 35, says, "There's nothing but things to buy. It scares me that we're such consumers... and it's not limited to the supermarket, it's life, we want the bigger, better brand.

"We just look at the package and think that looks like what will be best, and we buy it. I'm not talking products, I'm talking lifestyle, I'm talking ideology, I'm talking political agenda. It it's sold pretty enough, we'll buy it. And that scares the c**p out of me.

"Because I dare you to argue with someone who has just bought it - they'll say, 'What are you talking about? You're a crazy, liberal fanatic. Ridiculous.' It's a scary time."
