American singer RUFUS WAINWRIGHT has accused homophobes of driving him and other gay men to harm themselves.

The WANT TWO star believes that like many homosexuals, he became a drug addict to escape the depression and self-loathing caused by years of discrimination from the anti-gay community.

He explains, "I'm no angel and I never will be. I've always been a fan of human flesh and fruits of the youth. And right now, especially in the gay world, there are the appropriate narcotics to go with that, be it crystal meth, GHB, ecstasy or whatever, which can fulfil that fantasy to your utmost desires.

"I think many men have this built-in self-destruct button. After constant sexual frustration and real low-grade discrimination, it stores up somewhere and some drugs can really release that - and it's fun, but it's also very frightening. So that's the kind of trap I fell into."
