UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP has launched the first multinational-owned record label dedicated entirely to Latin urban music.

Universal are particularly interested in targetting the Puerto Rican musical phenomenon reggaeton and its leading lights DADDY YANKEE, TEGO CALDERON and DON OMAR.

Universal president ZACH HOROWITZ says, "The signs are all there. And it really does remind me of hip-hop when it was first starting. It had no radio airplay. It was a cultural event. It resonated with youth, and it's still with us."

The company's new Latin urban music imprint is called MACHETE MUSIC.
