THE WOMAN BEHIND THE WALTONS DIES

The woman who inspired THE WALTONS' beloved tomboy character MARY ELLEN has died of liver and kidney failure at a hospital in Virginia.

Writer EARL HAMNER JR, who created the hit family show, based the character of Mary Ellen on his sister MARION.

She was 74 when she passed away last week (begs22NOV04).
