SCRUBS STAR DISAPPOINTED WITH LATINA HOLLYWOOD CASTING

SCRUBS actress JUDY REYES has hit out at the way Latina women like her are portrayed in Hollywood.

The 36-year-old complains her compatriots are only offered roles playing one-dimensional maids - and urges film-makers to depict Latinas in a more positive light.

She says, "I do have a lot to say about this issue of Latinas being cast as maids. It's just so utterly played out, and it's a phenomenon created by non-Latino people Hollywood whose experiences with Latinas are limited to conversations they've had with their maids.

"It's just the disproportionate number of maid roles that needs to be examined. We don't need to ignore that a substantial amount of Latinas, especially recent immigrants, are maids, but we do have to give these characters more depth.

"I really think the salvation will be independent pursuits. You can't wait for Hollywood to come around. We have to be honest about what we want to say and how we want to expand our power."
