Australian actor GEOFFREY RUSH insisted his character in INTOLERABLE CRUELTY had to have his native accent - because he's noticed his antipodean background is quite trendy at the moment.

The Queensland native makes a very brief appearance at the start of the film - which stars GEORGE CLOONEY and CATHERINE ZETA-JONES - as a man who comes home to find his wife in bed with another man.

And Rush was determined to change the character's nationality to his own.

He explains, "They'd written the character as an Englishman, and I said, 'Look, I wanna work in my own accent. Can I make him an Aussie?'

"Aussies are kinda becoming a bit popular at the moment with tremendous colleagues and actor friends, like RUSSELL CROWE, CATE BLANCHETT and TONI COLETTE.

"I wanted people to also know that that kind of guy could come from Australia."
