Director SYDNEY POLLACK has slammed the Hollywood movie industry - for forcing him to dumb down his serious plot ideas to avoid scaring off mainstream audiences.
THE INTERPRETER film-maker complains he's forced to conceal his movie's intelligent themes and ideologies when introducing plans to movie moguls, because they are more interested in the big stars, special effects and box office success of his trademark blockbusters.
He explains, "I'm in the habit of trying to protect the commercial aspects of a movie because of the system I work in.
"For better or for worse, I got stuck in the swimming pool of mainstream Hollywood where you make expensive movies that are supposed to reach as many people as possible with big movie stars who make a lot of money and marketing costs that are enormous.
"You scare people if you talk about serious ideas so unfortunately I don't talk much about the ideas of a movie."
