LORETTA LYNN, WILCO, FRANZ FERDINAND, THE STREETS and DAVID BOWIE are five of the acts on the 70-strong nominees list for this year's (04) SHORTLIST MUSIC PRIZE for album of the year.

The Los Angeles-based prize giving alternative to Britain's MERCURY MUSIC PRIZE will be held in November (04) after judges including JACK BLACK, THE DIXIE CHICKS, ROBERT SMITH of THE CURE and NORAH JONES select a top 10 from the 70 hopefuls.

To be eligible for the Shortlist Prize, all albums must be critically acclaimed but not yet certified gold (sales of 500,000) in America. They're also restricted by release dates - all albums must have been released between July (03) and June (04).
