Teen actress LINDSAY LOHAN's new movie MEAN GIRLS has topped the American box office after taking $25 million (GBP13.8 million).

Two of last week's (ends30APR04) top movies continued to perform strongly, with DENZEL WASHINGTON thriller MAN ON FIRE moving to number two in its second week with $15.2 million (GBP8.4 million), and JENNIFER GARBER's 13 GOING ON 30 ranked third with $10 million (GBP5.5 million).

Three new films debuted with modest results. PIERCE BROSNAN and JULIANNE MOORE's LAWS OF ATTRACTION earned $7 million (GBP3.8 million) to come in fourth.

ROBERT DE NIRO and REBECCA ROMIJN-STAMOS' GODSEND collected $6.9 million (GBP3.8 million), while ENVY, starring BEN STILLER and JACK BLACK picked up $6.1 million (GBP3.3 million). Both films overcame harsh criticism to rank fifth and sixth, respectively.

After the runaway success of THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, JIM CAVIEZEL followed up his role as JESUS playing a real-life 1930's golfer in BOBBY JONES: STROKE OF GENIUS. The film failed to rank in the top 10 in its debut, earning just $1.3 million (GBP720,000).
