COLDPLAY frontman CHRIS MARTIN dragged director STEVEN SPIELBERG out of bed yesterday (03MAY05) and begged him to phone a London radio station to win $29,0000 (GBP15,000) in a competition.

The YELLOW singer was on DJ CHRISTIAN O'CONNELL's XFM breakfast show two weeks ago (ends23APR05) and vowed he could win the programme's Bounty Hunter contest, which involves listeners persuading celebrities to ring in.

And Martin, who is currently staying at Spielberg's Los Angeles mansion, kept his promise by waking the SCHINDLER'S LIST film-maker and asking him phone the show.

Martin received $19,000 (GBP10,000) while Spielberg won $9,500 (GBP5,000) for a charity of his choice - but Martin promises to share his cash with Spielberg, insisting, "let's face it, he needs it".

Spielberg said live on air, "I was sleeping 15 minutes ago and this knock came on my door. Chris comes in and he says there's something happening in the UK that you have to be part of. I'm crazy about this guy, I'll do anything for him, so here I am."

He added that he's grateful for the cash prize, explaining, "The JURASSIC PARK money is gone. We've just finished the house, it's all gone."
