COLDPLAY star CHRIS MARTIN punishes himself whenever he asks fellow celebrities if gossip about them is true - because British newspapers are always inventing sensational stories about him.

The IN MY PLACE singer has become a prime target for media scrutiny, largely because of his marriage to Hollywood actress GWYNETH PALTROW, and he's regularly forced to control his anger when fans quiz him about the latest stories they've read.

However, Martin admits he occasionally can't resist the temptation to read a gossipy showbiz magazine.

He says, "If a celebrity magazine is in an airport lounge, I'll have a look. I like gossip as much as the next man. But then, I'll bump into someone I've read about and I'll say, 'Oh, I read so-and-so...' and I curse myself, because I hate people coming up to me and going, 'Chris I read that you're macrobiotic, is that true?' And I say, 'Well, no, not really.'"
