Pop superstar MADONNA has been left disappointed - after attempting to buy the home of the late singer ROSEMARY CLOONEY.

Although realtors reportedly say the five-bedroom Beverly Hills, California, home is better off demolished, MATERIAL GIRL Madonna liked the property so much that she wanted to restore it.

Sources say Madonna, who used Clooney's hit song COME ON-A MY HOUSE in her movie flop SWEPT AWAY, wanted to own the home because of its prime 90210 location - doors away from the homes of such celebrity legends as LUCILLE BALL and JIMMY STEWART.

But the home has been sold for $7.75 million (GBP5.1 million) to a man who plans to demolish it.

Rosemary, aunt of Hollywood hunk GEORGE CLOONEY, had owned the home for 50 years up until her death from cancer in June (02). Composer GEORGE GERSHWIN was the previous owner.

The buyer, a businessman, who owns several large retail and wholesale properties in the downtown Los Angeles fashion district, reportedly plans to level the house after purchasing the property within its first week of being on the market.

The home, which sits on an acre of land, boasts two maids' quarters and a guesthouse, tennis courts and a pool.
