KIEFER SUTHERLAND always makes sure his 24 character JACK BAUER listens to cellphone conversations in one ear - because he's deaf in the other one.

Bauer spends a lot of time on his mobile in the fast-paced series - trying to negotiate with villains and co-ordinate with his peers, and so he always makes sure he's listening with the right ear.

He says, "I'm half-deaf in one ear, and so naturally I put the phone to my good ear."

There's one obstacle to this: "When I'm on the phone I can barely hear any other actors that I'm working with."
