Hollywood actor KIEFER SUTHERLAND was so distraught at the end of his affair with JULIA ROBERTS he couldn't leave his house.

Roberts broke of their engagement just days before the couple were due to wed, and the news devastated the star of hit TV show 24.

He says, "I thought everyone must hate me. I was scared to go out."

It's still unclear exactly why the PRETTY WOMAN stunner split with Sutherland, but he was relieved people supported him during his troubled time.

He adds, "I found people were just glad it hadn't happened to them. It was all a hard valuable lesson."
