ANGELINA JOLIE has told the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland she is ashamed the US has yet to sign a United Nations charter on protecting children's rights.

The actress is speaking at the event as a goodwill ambassador for the UN refugee agency.

She said today (27JAN05), "I am absolutely ashamed Washington has not formally ratified the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

"Being an American I think it's horrible. I think Congress should ratify that. If we really care about that how dare we not ratify it?"

Although the US signed the convention in 1995, it has yet to ratify the treaty, the only country besides Somalia yet to have done so.

From her platform Jolie also spoke of her first experiences at refugee camps: "It was a whole different world for me.

"Children should have an education. People should have a right to seek asylum. This has become very important to me."

Earlier today Jolie scolded those present at the forum for being star-struck by her.
